EXPLORATION (ages 6-9)

BROADWAY BOUND (ages 9-14)

Designers now have three sessions to explore their fashion-forward creativity.

Session Two: Knitting Jamboree approaches knitwear design as a means to create wearable sculpture full of playful and surprising possibilities. We will explore color, texture, scale and volume through the craft of  knitting. Students will learn both hand knitting and machine knitting techniques to invent their own 3-D textured fabric to be utilized in their designs. The whole process of knitwear design will be introduced from swatching, calculating stitches, researching inspiration to creating a mood board and keeping a design sketchbook. The focus will be on both designing one-of-a-kind knit textiles and wearable accessories such as hats, scarves, jewelry, capes, leg warmers, gloves or a tank top sweater. 

Session Three: Diversity on the Fashion Runway asks the question: what are subcultures? How are they defined by music, hobbies, history, class, cultural or political beliefs? How do people use fashion to communicate who they are to the world? These questions will be our point of departure as we spend two weeks investigating the ways humans seek to communicate what is special about them, and to what group(s) they identify with. Students will then create a garment that represents the key aspects of a chosen genre and will be challenged to juxtapose this genre with a historical era of their choosing – think punk in the 1950s or preppy with a Victorian silhouette. Students will use garment construction, basic textile concepts and fabric manipulation techniques to create their own textiles via dying and surface design. Each student's piece will be built with the intention of being both shown in a gallery setting as well as performed in. Students will have the opportunity to fit performers in their garment or perform in it themselves. Final designs will be translated into choreography performed in a site-specific performance at Minnesota Street Project in August 2018.

ART & DESIGN (ages 10-14)

Art & Design explores various aspects of and develops skills in visual art making.

Session One Art & Design: Sculpture explores the worlds of clay and three-dimensional creations.

In Session Two, Art & Design artists focus on the fine arts and building block skills of painting, drawing and illustration.

In Session Three, Art & Design takes young visual artists into the Artists’ Studio, an exploration of mixed-media arts that includes collage, paints, stecncils and more in Art & Design: Artists’ Studio (Mixed Media). A curated exhibition in SFArtsED’s Minnesota Street Project gallery space in August will feature work created in all Art & Design sessions. The exhibition runs through September.

SFArtsED Summer: blasts from the past.

Sometimes, if you're lucky, students become teachers.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the SFArtsED summer production is the added collabortion of former SFArtsED students and the younger performers. In addition to working with the best professional artists out there, the Broadway Bound program welcomes back SFArtsED alumni to tackle lead roles in the summer musical and serve as mentors to members of the Players musical theater troupe and to the novice Broadway Bound students. It's an extraordinary partnership, and you'll see the results in Guys and Dolls, performed July 22 at Hertz Hall on the UC Berkeley campus (showtime is 8pm) and on July 25 at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (showtime is 7:30pm). Inspiration comes in many forms.
For Broadway Bound students in Session 2, inspiration took the form of five boys who share the role of Billy Elliot in the touring production of the Tony Award-winning Billy Elliot: The Musical. With thanks to SHN, the five Billys spent an afternoon with our students doing warm-up routines, teaching dance steps and sharing insight into the life of a professional performer. Don Sanchez of ABC KGO-TV was there and filed this report:
