Candles by Stephanie Go
Graphite on paper
When we isolate ourselves from people, places
or anything, others will think we have lost interest
or that we’re depressed. But there is comfort
that can be found in isolation others don’t see. I
have found this comfort.

Technicolor Deer by Sofia Rothschild
Colored pencil on paper
An unusual deer lies in a clearing in the bracken.
Other creatures look on from their cells in the
dense underbrush.
-
Bird's Nest by Stephanie Go
Graphite on paper
Does being safe trap us?
The naked figure is being protected by this cardboard
box...yet she still wants to be free.
-
Tankman by Sophia Qin
Colored pencil on paper
Books, solid, ideas, lined up one by one. A foundation
for what? A ground for defiance? For foolishness?

Flight House by Marikit Mayeno
Graphite on paper
We are plastic, stationery flamingos. A real flamingo
flies overhead, an idea of freedom.
People breaking loose from handcuffs and an American
flag show up under “freedom” on google images.
Flamingos aren’t in Washington and this flock
is too kitsch for the likes of this government.
-
Mute Box by Sophia Qin
Pen on paper
Trapped, these girls are attempting to speak to express their
individuality through the horns, but nothing can be heard.
Who made this box? Why might someone want to take away
this basic aspect of human nature? Authorities and governments
especially, fear the power of speech throughout history;
it has been a fundamental device that caused societal
upheavals and revolutions.
-
9 Brick Cubes by Stephanie Go
Graphite on paper
The openings are large enough for them to
leave, yet they choose to stay. There’s nothing
stopping them from leaving or remaining. Why
do we stay inside our own prisons?
-
Teacher by Piper Alan
Oil pastel on paper
Trapped energy… millions of thoughts racing
unable to break out...
-
Maelstrom by Marina Kyle
Graphite on paper
What happens when you overcome a fear or
a challenge? Is there always going be another
hole to climb out of? Will it ever end?
-
Deer and Car by Sofia Rothschild
Pen and ink on paper
Decomposing, body and a car silently interact.
-
Pig/cliff by Sophia Qin
Watercolor and acrylic on paper
Will ink have enough force? To drown, to cause,
to attack?
-
Gravity by Marina Kyle
Graphite on paper
We are all the center of our own worlds. Both people
in this drawing exist but their existence does not affect
each other. The dent that they are making in the
world will disappear and the traces that this person
left will disappear. Are they trying to cover themselves
up and completely block each other out? Or
are they slowly trying to break down their defenses
and reach out to each other?
-
Wasp Nest by Sofia Rothschild
Colored pencil on paper
Two airborne species play house-swap and compromise.
-
Poodle by Sofia Rothschild

its will.
-
Cloud by Piper Alan, Nilo Batle, Stephanie Go, Marina Kyle, Marikit Mayeno, Sofi
Photographs
Working individually or in small groups, the students responded
to anomalies on the street. Using powdered chalk
and water mixture or found street materials, the students
placed words next to the site. The street seemed to talk;
brief utterances from the world around them.
-
Conveyor belt by Sophia Qin
Graphite on paper
Recycling. Reusing. Recycling. Reusing. What has
happened to us? Are we mere parts of machines-
-completely in tune, gears turning, clicking? Why are
we still on?
-
Self-portrait by Nilo Batle
Archival digital print
This piece was created by accident. I found an old
photo of myself and began to put dots on my eyes,
nose and mouth then began to fill in the empty spots
on the face. When I turned the paper around I realized
that the marker has seeped through to the other
side and had created a much more interesting image.
-
The Fountain by Marina Kyle
Acrylic on canvas
Endlessly climbing to the top of the fountain
with no end, carrying the water up just to dump it.
-
Person on bed by Piper Alan
Acrylic on wood panel
The squiggled lines swirling embody the confusion
or frustration that we may feel at times.
The light coming from the flashlight swirls similarly
….like another body. Are they the same?
-
Me, myself, and I by Marina Kyle
Braided synthetic hair, muslin, poly fill, acrylic mirror, epoxy putty, thread and paint
...self-conscious...wrapped in her own braided
hair…. Suspended
to strangle? ... to shield?
