Destry Rides Again is a gem of a show from the rollicking 1959 Broadway season, and it's full of energetic dancing and some great songs (by Harold Rome). SFArtsED Summer is always an inspiring place to be, but for Session 2 Broadway Bound campers, the inspiration was a little more intense this year. On tour with Billy Elliot the Musical, the five young actors who share the title role dropped by camp to spend the afternoon conducting a master class. KGO's Don Sanchez was there and filed this report.

The Emmy Award-winning FOX TV show Glee is a cultural phenomenon, and it’s making musical theater cool. According to the San Francisco Arts Education Project, they’re seeing an incredible increase in the number of kids who want to be involved in their musical theater programs. They’re calling it the Glee effect.
During a six-week summer camp session, the musical theater company saw a record 60 students participate in the creation of a staged concert production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, performed with the UC Berkeley Summer Symphony. And SFArtsED Players, a youth musical theater troupe for ages 9 to 15, is as big as it has been in nearly a decade with 54 kids. Also a record number of boys were involved – 21 – which, given the history of musical theater programs, is an impressive participation level.
Credit the Glee effect.

-- SFArtsED supporters gathered at the San Francisco Conservatory last week for a fundraiser that included a concert version of the music from "Carousel," performed by 70 singers ages 8 to 24 and 50 members of the UC
Berkeley Summer Symphony. Rodney Jackson, who's in his second year at Carnegie Mellon and got his start at SFArtsED on scholarship, played Billy Bigelow; Julie was played by Patricia St. Peter, who just graduated from the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, and started at SFArtsED when she was 8. "It was so moving," e-mailed Lynne Winslow, "to see the alumni performing lead roles while awestruck kids followed."

On Monday July 19 at 8pm The San Francisco Arts Education Project (SFArtsED) will celebrate the tenth year of its musical theater troupe for young people, The SFArtsED Players, with a performance at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, 50 Oak Street. SFArtsED Players alumni will join members of the troupe and SFArtsED summer students in a staged concert version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical.

The company will consist of returning alumni of SFArtsED programs in the principal roles, current members of the troupe and students in the organization’s performing arts summer camp. Proceeds from the evening will support scholarships for the SFArtsED summer camps and after school programs for families in need.
The production is being directed by Danny Duncan with musical direction by conductor Henry Shin. Choreographers for the production include Natalie Greene and Nicola Bosco. The production is a collaboration with the UC Berkeley Summer Symphony whose 55 members will share the stage with the 60 young performers in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical called by Time magazine the best musical of the 20th century.
Carousel was first performed on Broadway in 1945 and has had numerous revivals on Broadway and in London as well as being adapted as a movie and television special. The musical contains the well known and loved songs If I Loved You, June is Bustin’ Out All Over, and You’ll Never Walk Alone.

The San Francisco Arts Education Project (SFArtsED) celebrates the ninth year of its musical theater company, The SFArtsED Players, with three weekend performances of Broadway’s Pulitzer Prize winning, Fiorello! at San Francisco's Eureka Theatre (215 Jackson Street, between Front and Battery) for a three-week engagement beginning Friday, February 5; with a Gala fundraiser Saturday February 20th at 2:00pm.

Tickets range in price from $10 for students and seniors, and $15 for adults and are available by phone at 415.392.4400 and on the Web at www.cityboxoffice.com. All tickets for the Gala performance are $30.
One of only seven musicals to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Fiorello! is based on the life of New York City mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia. The book is by Jerome Weidman and George Abbott, with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and music by Jerry Bock. The musical follows the life of LaGuardia during World War I and ten years later. As mayor of New York City, LaGuardia reformed city politics by helping end Tammany Hall’s formidable political machine.
These special performances of Fiorello! are a collaboration of SFArtsED, the School of the Arts High School Technical Theater program (SOTA) and Theatre Rhinoceros. The SFArtsED Players, featuring theater performers ranging in ages from nine through fifteen, will be sharing the Eureka Theatre performance space and a common set with Theatre Rhinoceros during its 2009-2010 season. The students from School of the Arts High School’s (SOTA) program will design the technical aspects of the performances including the set and props and are responsible for the stage management of the show, as part of SFArtsED's apprentice programs. Jon Lowe, Theatre Rhinoceros’s lighting designer will mentor the SOTA theater apprentices, teaching the students lighting design and operational skills.
Following its Eureka Theatre run, The SFArtsED Players will perform Fiorello! at SOTA (555 Portola Drive), in free matinee performances for San Francisco Unified School District students on April 15 and 16 at 10:00 am.
Fiorello! is directed by Danny Duncan. Diana Lee is the Musical Director and Conductor. Vocal directors are Robert Cowan and Ben Keim. Choreography is provided by Natalie Greene, Katie Kerwin and Emily Keeler, who is also the Artistic Director of SFArtsED and the SFArtsED Players.
